Fontana Unified School District Translate Search District News Fontana Unified’s ‘Grab and Go’ Meals Feed Students Amid School Closures Amid school closures and concerns over COVID-19, Fontana Unified is tackling the challenge of keeping students well-fed through its “Grab and Go” meal distribution program, which provides breakfast and lunch meals for children ages 18 and under. Comments (-1) more FUSD Videos A Message From Our Superintendent April 1, 2020 Dear Fontana Unified School District families: The health and safety of our students, staff, and our surrounding community is a top priority for all. The evolving Novel Coronavirus COVID-19 situation continues to cause educational institutions and organizations in virtually all industries to make difficult decisions regarding their operations. We recognize that we must take appropriate measures to do our part in controlling and containing the potential spread of the virus. We continue to follow the guidance of the State of California, San Bernardino County Superintendent of Schools, and Public Health experts on how we can keep our community safe. Yesterday evening Tony Thurmond, our California State Superintendent of Public Instruction, put out a communication urging all school districts to move towards distance learning opportunities for the remainder of the school year. Today, the Governor of California reinforced this message. Fontana Unified has developed a distance learning plan and is actively implementing this scenario to facilitate learning during this unique time. On March 19, we announced the closing of all Fontana Unified schools through Friday, May 1, 2020, with the option of extending this closure if necessary. In alignment with the recommendations of the Governor, State Superintendent of Public Instruction, the Department of Public Health, and the San Bernardino County Superintendent of Schools, Fontana Unified schools will be closed to normal operations through the end of the traditional school year. This decision is a difficult one, but the safety of our students, staff and their families remains our main priority. During the closure period, no matter the length, we will continue to provide students with quality learning opportunities and supports. Students and families will continue to be provided with resources, both digitally and printed. We are continuing to develop and deliver innovative avenues for students to learn and grow in the context of the current situation. We understand that this closure has caused many of the normal classroom and school related experiences to now be transferred to the home. We also understand that our students value these experiences and we will make every effort to provide those experiences either at a later date or in a different format. FUSD will continue to provide “Grab and Go” meals to those who require them at ten selected school locations throughout the District. These meals are available for all children 18 and under. We want to remind you to continue to take simple everyday preventive actions to help prevent the spread of respiratory viruses. These include washing hands with soap and water, coughing into sleeve/tissue, staying home if sick, and practicing social distancing.
